Information You Provide
- Account Information: Email address and name when you create an account
- Expense Data: Transaction details, amounts, descriptions, and participant information you enter
- Receipt Images: Photos of receipts you upload for itemization
- Profile Information: Optional profile photo and phone number
Automatically Collected Information
- Device Information: Device type, operating system version (for app compatibility and bug fixes)
- Usage Data: App features used and crash reports (to improve the app)
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide and maintain the SplitSmart service
- Process and itemize receipts using AI
- Sync your expense data across devices
- Send you important service updates and notifications
- Improve app functionality and fix bugs
- Provide customer support
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely on our servers. We use industry-standard encryption to protect your information during transmission and storage.
Receipt Images: When you upload a receipt for itemization, the image is temporarily stored on our servers and sent to our AI service provider for processing. If you save the itemized expense, the receipt image is permanently stored with that transaction. If you do not save the expense, the receipt image is automatically deleted from our servers after 15 minutes.
Third-Party Services
We use minimal third-party services:
- Receipt Processing: Receipt images are sent to our AI service provider for itemization
- Cloud Infrastructure: We use secure cloud hosting to store your expense data
- Authentication: We use secure authentication services to protect your account
We do NOT use: advertising networks, analytics trackers, or sell your data to anyone. Ever.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. We only share data when:
- You explicitly choose to share expenses with other users
- Required by law or legal process
- Necessary to protect our rights or the safety of our users
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your data
- Delete: Request deletion of your account and personal information
- Correct: Update or correct your information
Data Retention and Account Deletion
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you request account deletion:
- Your personal information (name, email, profile photo) is permanently removed
- Your account is deactivated and you can no longer log in
- Shared expenses and transaction history remain visible to other users in shared groups (as removing these would affect other users' records), but your personal identifying information is replaced with "Deleted User"
- Any unsaved receipt images are immediately deleted
This approach ensures that other users' expense records remain accurate while protecting your privacy.
Children's Privacy
SplitSmart is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes via email or app notification. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
